"I was furious when I found out my son's school had banned all AI tools outright, not just for assignments, but for research, for drafts, for anything. I marched in to see the headteacher ready for a fight. She was equally frustrated, not with me, it turned out, but with the situation. She had no guidance from the local authority, no training budget for teachers, and three different parents demanding completely opposite things: one wanted a full ban, one wanted full freedom, one wanted a detailed policy she had six weeks to write. We ended up doing something odd: we formed a working group. Three parents, three teachers, the deputy head. Six months later, the school had a policy that actually made sense. It wasn't perfect. But my son now has honest conversations with his teachers about when and how he uses AI. That would never have happened if I'd just won the fight."

Schools are often where parents expect the AI question to be answered. They wait for the curriculum to catch up, for the teacher to explain the rules, for the institution to provide clarity.

But here's what the data shows: most schools aren't yet in a position to lead on this. They're doing their best in difficult circumstances: under-resourced, under-trained, and receiving inconsistent guidance from governments and school authorities still working out their own positions.
