"I was in a pretty dark place about this for a while. I'd read enough alarming headlines to be genuinely afraid: that AI was going to make my daughter lazy, that she'd never learn to think for herself, that her whole generation was about to be cheated out of developing their minds. I started blocking apps, limiting screen time, refusing to let her use any AI tools for homework. She resented it. And then I bumped into a friend who runs a secondary school, and she said something that reframed the whole thing for me. 'The research doesn't show what you're afraid of, if the use is guided. What it shows is that passive, unguided use is problematic. But the solution to passive use isn't no use. It's guided use.' I had been solving the right problem with the wrong intervention. We sat down and talked about it as a family. That conversation changed everything."

If you've made it to this chapter, you've probably been carrying at least a few of the worries we're about to discuss. You may have been carrying them for a while.

That's entirely appropriate. The stakes are real. Your child's cognitive development, academic integrity, privacy, and social and emotional health are all genuinely implicated by the rise of AI. The parents who aren't worried are probably not paying attention.
